The "Chord Approach" is the system used by most self-taught and professional musicians. The emphasis is on creativity and enjoyment rather than the tedious and boring note reading so often stressed in piano lessons. As any professional musician will tell you, "know your chords, and you can do anything!" We teach music as a language. Can you imagine trying to read and write before you learned to speak? It would be a nightmare - unfortunately music has been taught that way for centuries and is contrary to the way most of the great classical composers and musicians taught Piano. Teachers such as the great Franz Liszt emphasized the study of "Harmony" (chords) to students long before he would introduce note reading. This gave students a way to understand musical relationships of chords and scales early on, as a foundationtion for not only improvising but being able look inside a piece of music and understand it's architecture completely.
